Wind Turbine Question & Answers FAQ
This FAQ is aimed at providing you some answers to the most common questions you may have on wind turbines.
Q1: How much will it cost to buy a wind turbine?
A1: It all depends on the size of your wind turbine. A 10 kW wind turbine system installed would cost between $15-18,000 USD a 15kW turbine system installed would cost about US$19k to 25k, a 50kW wind turbine installed would be about US40k to US$60k and a 1MW turbine would cost in the region of USD$600k. Please note that each project has its oun ground works, shipment costs and sometimes feasibility study requirements.
Q2: How much electricity will it produce?
A2: This will depend on size of wind turbine and the location. The below provides an example for a 6kW wind turbine.
Size / Wind speed
5m/s
6m/s
7m/s
8/ms
6kW
11,000kWh
16,000kWh
21,000kWh
25,000kWh
Q3: Do I need to pay income tax?
A3: NO if your installation is on a domestic dwelling then the Feed In Tariff will be tax free. But if you are a company, revenue generated from the Feed In Tariff will be subject to taxation.
Q4: Can I erect a wind turbine myself?
A4: Turbines under 50kW must be installed by a accredited installer to be eligible for the Feed In Tariff. Above 50kW, we would strongly recommend that you get a company with expertise in wind turbines so that you reduce your installation risk.
Q5: How much land do I need?
A5: This all depends on the size and number of wind turbines you want to install. For example, for a small wind turbine of 6kW, it is recommended to allow 150 metres distance from anything (such as a house or shed).
Q6: Can I sell my wind turbine electricity?
A6: Yes.
Q7: How much money will I be awarded for the energy my turbine produces?
A7: This depends on the size of your wind turbine and site. For instance a 6kW wind turbine on a good site has the potential to earn up to us$7,000 a year. A 10kW, has the potential to earn up to US$12,000 and 50kW turbine up to us$50,000 per year.
Q8: Is it better for me to use my wind turbine electricity at home?
A8: Yes. As a homeowner you usually purchase electricity for between $1.00 to $1.60 per kWh. Hence, it is better to use the electricity directly produced from your wind turbine than to sell it per kWh to a utility supplier. You are saving per kWh (1.00 /kWh – 0.60 per kWh) if you use your own wind turbine electricity.
Q9: So how can I use the energy produced from my turbine instead of selling it to the Grid?
A9: Any energy generated by your wind turbine will first supply demand within your home (provided that your installation is connected through your home).
Q10: Do I need to set up anything with an electricity company to get a payment?
A10: Yes. You are required to register your installation with a utility company to claim your Feed In Tariff. This is a process that we can help you with.
Q11: Do wind turbines require any maintenance?
A11: Yes. Turbines will typically require basic annual maintenance.
Q12: What warranty can I expect to receive on my installation?
A12: Each turbine manufacturer has its own warranty period ranging from 2 to 10 years.
Q13: Are wind turbines noisy?
A13: Wind turbines do produce some noise. However, each wind turbine manufacturer is required to undertake a noise assessment so you can understand the noise produced by the turbine. The Pure Energy Centre can provide this information for your project.
Q14: What do I need to do if I want to buy a turbine?

Q15: Do I need a planning permission?
A15: Yes. You would need to obtain your planning permission services from your local Council / Authority. We can support you through this process.
Q16: How long will a wind turbine last?
A16: The lifetime of a wind turbine usually varies between manufacturers but a typical design life is between 15 and 20 years.
