Ormat and utility plan start of Puna geothermal plant in November 2019

Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) and local utility HELCO have announced plans to bring the Puna geothermal power plant in Hawaii back into operation in the month of November 2019.

A planned community meeting on May 17, 2019 will provide details by officials representing PGV, the Hawai’i Electric Light Company (HELCO), and Hawai’i County.

In March of 2019, HELCO notified the Public Utilities Commission of a Rebuild Agreement with PGV, including rebuilding a switching station and transmission lines. An exhibit provided in the original news piece, provides a project schedule.

Discussions now going on also include the possibility of an amended Power Purchase Agreement, so the news.

In additional news of May 16, 2019, it is reported that the project must “win state approval before rebuilding transmission lines wiped out by volcanic eruption .. and that Puna Geothermal Venture must hold a public hearing and receive state Public Utilities Commission permission before rebuilding.”
